Working dog joint problems can affect mobility, performance, and long-term comfort. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease involving cartilage damage, bone changes, inflammation, pain, and reduced function. It commonly develops after dysplasia, cruciate disease, trauma, osteochondrosis, or long-term instability. Older dogs are frequently affected, but arthritis can begin much earlier after an orthopedic disorder or injury.

Early signs may include stiffness after rest, slower movement, reduced range of motion, or difficulty changing position. The dog may shorten a stride or shift weight away from a painful limb. These changes can be easier to detect when handlers know the dog’s normal working pattern.

Rehabilitation exercises must match the diagnosis and stage of recovery. A program designed for cruciate surgery may be unsuitable for a shoulder or iliopsoas injury. Progress should be measured through comfort, strength, balance, endurance, and movement quality rather than eagerness alone.

Joint Risks Vary by Breed and Job

Breed and occupation can help identify areas that deserve closer observation. They cannot diagnose an injury or predict how an individual dog will age. Structure, conditioning, previous injuries, surfaces, and workload all influence orthopedic health.

  • German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois: Monitor hips, elbows, spine, and repetitive-impact injuries.
  • Labrador Retrievers: Watch body condition and signs involving the hips, elbows, knees, and shoulders.
