Sights, sounds and smells play a huge role in bringing our memories back to life. They can make you laugh or cry.

Memories are not limited to humans. All thinking creatures experience memories to some degree. They create a variety of emotions when something awakens them.

Memories can evoke very strong reactions. How do you feel when you hear the song that brings back memories of your first crush? How about the song your mother sang to you at bedtime when you were young?

You should not be surprised at how these German Pointers behaved when they realized where they were going. Their memories act much like ours do.

They clearly felt the urge to celebrate when they recognized the direction in which they were headed. The familiar landmarks triggered memories of their puppyhood.

The Story of How The Dogs Reacted

“One day this past summer I decided to take my dog and my parents’ dogs out to the quarry where they have been going since they were all just little puppies. Every single time they are taken to the quarry, when they are just around the corner they start howling, because they are so excited and this time was no exception. They don’t stop until the vehicle is parked.”

The minute the four dogs realize that the quarry where they played as pups is close at hand, they go beserk. They jump and bounce in the car as they whine and howl to express their joy.

Can you imagine the kinds of memories they might have of playing in the quarry as puppies?  How do you feel when you visit the places of your childhood?  Does the visit cause any emotions to arise?

Even though we will never know exactly what the dogs were thinking, their emotions were clear. Their memories must have been good ones!

What is your opinon of canine memories? Can you visualize potential memories that might cause this kind of reaction?

As Wife, Mother of 5, and Nana of many more, I have known and loved many dogs who were treasured members of our family. My education, experiences in showing, breeding, and developing pedigree-based breeding programs for others gives me a strong background upon which to base articles of interest to most dog lovers. However, it is my great love for dogs that gives me the passion to share them with other dog lovers.
